Geir Rafnsson first studied percussion at Akureyri Music School in the North of Iceland with Roar Kvam. He then went on to the FIH School of Music in Reykjavík where he received a grant for outstanding achievements and graduated in 1994. From 1995- 1997 he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
In Iceland Geir played in Rock bands, dance bands and theaters as well as the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and various other chamber groups. Geir now works in England as a freelance percussionist, composer and teacher. In 1997 he won second prize in the Percussive Arts Society’s Annual Composition Contest for “Hekla” a piece for solo marimba.
He has worked in several different chamber groups such as the Mosaic flute and percussion duo and 4-MALITY percussion quartet who have received wide acclaim and performed at a variety of festivals, conferences and music societies in the UK and abroad, including the Edinburgh Festival and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. He is currently focusing his efforts on his ever-expanding percussion teaching practice and building up his already extensive array of compositions.
